FAMILIES who have lost loved ones in the Victoria fires will receive a $10,000 compassion and bereavement payment.

The Victorian Government has announced that the payment can be used by families to meet costs associated with the loss of a family member, including funeral-related costs.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said this was the first decision announced by the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund Advisory Panel.

The organisation has also announced that former governor of Victoria and Olympic great John Landy had been appointed the chair of the advisory panel.

"I commend the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund Advisory Panel for its first decision, which will be given in compassion to recognise the bereavement of our fellow Victorians," Mr Brumby said.
