I'M KNOWN around here as the wombat lady because I have a wildlife shelter and wombats make up most of my residents.
On the day of the fire, the local police officer rang and said: "Irene, get the hell out." One minute there was a flame on top of the hill, five minutes later the house was gone. I had no time to grab any of my animals. As far as I was concerned, they'd all died.
The next morning, my son returned to the property, which was a pile of ashes. He said you couldn't see anything but thick smoke. But then, through the car headlights, out walked Tags. He was no longer white. He was smouldering but somehow he was alive.
He went to Healesville animal sanctuary. They didn't expect him to pull through, but after some antibiotics, he came good. He's my little miracle.
